Core Features of HPT: Metrics, Recovery & AI Insights

The HPT betas are live on iOS and Android, and behind that simple "start a session" button is a full hockey performance system — the same kind of data pro teams pay a fortune for, built to ride along on a watch you might already own. If you're wondering what you actually get, here's a tour of the core features, from the automatic tracking that captures your skate to the AI that tells you what it means.

Automatic tracking that does the work for you

The heart of HPT is hands-off session tracking. Pair a supported smartwatch — an Apple Watch today, with Wear OS in closed beta — and HPT records the whole skate for you: it detects your shifts from motion, measures speed and distance, and reads heart rate from bench to buzzer. You just play, then check the numbers when you step off the ice.

No watch yet? You can still download HPT free and log sessions manually from your iPhone — you enter the session and HPT keeps your history and trends. The automatic metrics (shifts, speed, heart rate, recovery) are what need a watch; the journal is yours either way.

One thing is always yours to enter: goals and assists. The watch tracks the work — the scoresheet is still your call.

35 documented metrics across three areas

Once a session lands, HPT breaks your performance into three areas so the numbers actually mean something:

  • Cardiovascular — average and max heart rate, heart-rate zones, VO₂ max, heart-rate variability (HRV), heart-rate recovery (HRR), recovery efficiency, pace consistency, and a fatigue index.
  • Core performance — distance, average and top speed, calories, number of shifts, your longest and shortest shift, average shift duration, work-to-rest ratio, and overall effort level.
  • Explosiveness — acceleration bursts, average burst speed, and max explosiveness, so you can see the jump in your first three strides, not just your steady-state speed.

That's 35 documented metrics in total — far more than the handful most hockey apps stop at, and the kind of detail that turns "I felt slow tonight" into something you can actually point at.

Recovery readiness: know when to push

Tracking how hard you went is only half the story. HPT's recovery readiness combines your HRV and resting heart rate and compares them to your 30-day average to gauge whether your body is ready for the next hard skate — or asking for a rest day. It lives right on your home dashboard as a quick read on how recovered you actually are, instead of guessing. Recovery is where a lot of amateur players leave performance on the table, and seeing it trend is the first step to fixing it.

Trends: watch a season take shape

Single sessions are useful. Patterns are where the real improvement hides. The Trends view charts your data over time across four lenses — core performance, cardiovascular, explosiveness, and direct session-to-session comparison — with graphs, time-based filters, and the option to export your data for recruiting or your own deeper analysis. Watch your average speed climb, your work-to-rest ratio tighten, or your fatigue index settle across a full season.

AI insights: a coach's read on your data

Numbers are one thing; knowing what to do about them is another. HPT's AI insights turn your sessions into plain-language feedback — progress-aware analysis that looks across multiple sessions to spot what's improving, what's slipping, and where to focus next. It's like having someone review your tape and your fitness data at the same time. AI insights are part of HPT Pro.

Community: leaderboards, trophies, and sharing

Hockey is a team game, and HPT keeps it social. The community features include leaderboards — Overall Performance Score, plus filterable boards for goals, assists, and distance — a trophy case for achievements like "Fastest Shift" and "Longest Distance," a community feed, and friends you can compare with. You can also share your data directly with a coach you're connected with. Dedicated team dashboards for coaches are on the roadmap; today the focus is on player-to-player and player-to-coach sharing.

Free to start, yours to grow

You can start tracking for free. From there:

  • Pro — $7.99/month or $69.99/year, which unlocks AI insights and deeper analytics.
  • Lifetime — a one-time $199 (it's expected to rise to $249 later) for founders who want it all, for good.

The iOS and Android betas are live now, with official store launches to follow.

Get on the ice

The best feature is the one you actually use, so the fastest way to understand HPT is to log a session and watch the data roll in. Curious what real players have already racked up? Take a look at the beta by the numbers.
